Community and Social Progress
- The EHS department has forged a partnership with the soil conservation
district representatives from Vanderburgh and Gibson Counties to conduct
a one-day Environmental Science Workshop at Evans Middle School in Evansville.
The workshop stresses water quality by having the sixth graders collect
water samples from nearby rivers, streams, ponds, and home for testing
and comparing the results to water quality standards. The workshop fulfills
one of the science credit requirements for sixth grade.
- Mead Johnson Nutritionals is a member of the U.S. EPA's Waste Wise
Program. Waste Wise is a program that offers industry access to resources
that assist in managing waste disposal to minimize municipal landfill
waste. Annual reporting requirements include the reporting of recycling
and waste management activities.
- The EHS department is participating on the Pandemic Planning task
force through disaster recovery business alliance (DRBA) and the local
emergency planning committee (LEPC).
- The Director of EHS at Evansville, was elected to a sixth term as
treasurer of the Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC). The LEPC
develops and coordinates emergency planning, receives and records information
regarding chemical releases, educates the public about risks from accidental
and routine releases of chemicals, and works with facilities to reduce
risks.
- A Manager of EHS at Evansville, serves as chairman of the Disaster
Recovery Business Alliance (DRBA) of Southwestern Indiana. The Mead
Johnson facility is a founding member of DRBA which seeks to incorporate
and coordinate the private sector in the emergency response and recovery
process.
- A Manager of EHS, located in Evansville, has served as chairman of
the Tri-State Industrial Safety Council (TSISC) for three years. TSISC
is comprised of 23 local industries whose goal is to obtain a properly
trained and safe contractor workforce and eliminate redundant orientations
at participating industries by providing consistent, cost effective,
reciprocal safety education that conforms to regulatory standards and
industry accepted practices.
- The Ergonomic Team's process is distinctive in that all job functions
are represented, and it ties several business units together for ergonomic
solutions. The core level is comprised of individuals that meet monthly
to plan and prioritize issues for the Ergonomics Team. The coordinating
level includes individuals in each department who implement ergonomic
solutions as designed and ensure adequate communication to employees.
The resource level is comprised of individuals who assist in engineering
or specific area needs. The tiered approach ultimately provides management
with an overview of the ergonomics program, giving them the knowledge
needed to make informed decisions regarding the dollars needed, and
showing management the advantages of being proactive in ergonomics.
- An electronic incident reporting system has been implemented for
MJN including global, PRI, ITO, and MWDC. This enables employees to
report incidents, near misses, and pain or discomfort immediately and
to have a means of communicating issues to all employees. The system
also allows for database management such as sorting, automatic routing,
and notification of delinquent reports.
Greenway Project Awarded Donation from Mead Johnson & Bristol-Myers Squibb
To help commemorate their 100th Anniversary, Mead Johnson Nutritionals
and the Bristol-Myers Squibb Foundation came together to provide a gift
of $250,000 to the City of Evansville Parks Foundation for the Greenway
project. The Greenway project which began in the mid-1990s, will eventually
encircle the city, forming a bicycle/pedestrian path with links to neighborhoods
and parks. The donation, which is the largest corporate donation to
the Greenway project, will enable the city to receive $2.2 million in
matching funds. These funds will be used to complete the next section
of the Greenway project which will extend from Casino Aztar to just
north of Franklin Street . This new portion of the greenway will follow
the north side of Ohio Street to Pigeon Creek where a new trailhead
parking area and canoe launch will be created. In addition, the new
section will include a passage to the historic Joan Marchand Bridge
that is currently being restored and converted to a lookout point. Mead
Johnson Nutritionals and the Bristol-Myers Squibb Foundation were pleased
to be able to provide this gift to the Evansville Parks Foundation -
and to give something back to the community that has supported Mead
Johnson for 90 years. The Greenway project is important to the quality
of life in the Evansville area because it not only creates "green
space," it also promotes healthy activity to people of all ages.
Environmental Performance
- In support of the Bristol-Myers Squibb 2010 Sustainability Goals,
the EHS department has leased a new hybrid pick-up truck. We are the
first BMS site to use the hybrid truck.

- The National Wildlife Habitat Council has certified the Wildlife Habitat
Development Project completed at the Mt. Vernon facility. Project goals
include: promotion of soil and water conservation, collaboration with
IDNR and USDA, improving nesting, brood and escape habitat for upland
wildlife through the establishment of field borders, hedgerows, and
warm season native grasses, while adding aesthetic value to employees
and visitors and minimizing mowing/fuel requirements.
The facility has adopted the Peregrine Falcon as part of the company's
Sustainability 2010 goal
to encourage each facility and business to help protect endangered species
and habitats.
- A partnership between BMS and the Indiana Chapter of the Nature Conservancy
has promoted environmental stewardship. Funds from a BMS Foundation
Grant are being used to assist in a 240-acre addition to Saunders Woods,
a State Nature Preserve in Gibson County, Indiana. Saunders Woods is
a rare remnant and best remaining example of a Wabash River wet-mesic,
bottomland forest.
- In 2006 and 2007, the Evansville and Mt. Vernon manufacturing areas
plan to obtain OSHAs Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) star status
where the business units will essentially enter into a partnership with
OSHA. The VPP process emphasizes holding managers accountable for worker
safety and health, the continual identification and elimination of hazards,
and the active involvement of employees in their own protection.
- The Evansville and Mt. Vernon sites have implemented a Behavior-Based
Safety (BBS) Process. This process is managed by the employees and is
intended to reduce injuries through education, observation of behaviors,
and sharing of information. Results to date have been excellent. Employees
can refer to the monthly BBS matrix located on the EHS website.
